The lake of Chalikounas provides a safe haven for many rare bird species and this area has generally escaped the ravages of tourism. Apart from the main Prasoudi beach, other sandy coves such as Skidi, Kanouli and Prasoudi offer a quiet spot for sunbathing and the swimming is excellent.
The beach of Prassoudi, situated at the foot of mountain Gamelion, known from many myths of Greek Mythology, today on this mountain it is found the famous Monastery of Pantokratoras. You will enjoy swimming at this beach, but the nearby beaches of Kanouli or Chalikounas are also a good alternative.
The breathtaking Chalikounas (or Halikounas Beach) is located to the south western coast of the island of Corfu. Its one of the best beaches in Corfu for kite surfing and windsurfing.Near the beach you can find the Korission Lake which is a heaven of over 120 avian species like Oysters, Great White Egrets, Curlews, to name just a few. The area is surrounded by lush green forest cover consisting primarily of stately Cedar and Juniper trees.
The best part of the Chalikounas beach is that it has soft sand dunes and is perfectly safe for swimming. What is more, there are no modern edifices like hotels, bars etc. facing the sea which goes a long way in maintaining the beauty of the beach. Also, it is one beach which is comparatively less crowded than its counterparts elsewhere on the island of Corfu Greece. The beach has taken every care for the physically challenged tourists to the beach and there are adequate provisions in the form of access points that are located at strategic points of the beach front with enough space to allow passage of wheelchairs.Chalikounas is a wonderful choice for a peaceful holiday with its endless sandy beach and local tavernas/ restaurants. Apart from the fabulous main beach, other pretty spots such as Skidi and Prasoudi offer more secluded options for sunbathing and swimming. Despite its peaceful setting Chalikounas beach is an easy 5 km drive from the popular resort of Agios Georgios (south) which gives you a full range of facilities and nightlife.
Issos beach is located on the southwest side of Corfu island under Lake Korission and just above Agios Georgios.
You can see this village laying in the distance from the beach. Issos Beach is a long and wide sandy beach. It lies at the end of a narrow paved road that ends at a parking lot. The last meters to the beach are over a dirt road, which can be driven over with any normal car. At the beach of Issos is a taverna and there are sunbeds and umbrellas for rent. There are also opportunities for water sports. The stretch on the north side of the beach, where no sunbeds are rented out, is also used by naturist. It must be said that that part of the beach was not cleaned when we visited and therefore there was a lot of seaweed and quite a bit of garbage on it. In the sea opposite the beach lies the small island of Lagoudia.
Moraitika village, is a traditional village just 6 km from Villa Ariti and 20km away from the Corfu Town, on the southeast coast of the island.
